Bears in Hazenmore are an ambient alternative rock group based out of Regina, Saskatchewan, Treaty 4. Since their formation in 2014, the band has become known for creating atmospheric soundscapes and their ability to draw audiences in with intimate lyrics and enticing builds.
Airwaves was recorded in May of 2015 at SoulSound Studio in Regina, SK with the wonderful and talented Orion Paradis at the helm as engineer and co-producer. The EP took shape over the past year since the last release, incorporating new and old material and featuring more involved group arrangements. The thematic material that ties the EP together is taken from the title track, which Brady wrote about experiences he had as a kid.
"My family goes camping every summer in Cypress Hills. When my brother and I were young, we used to go up to Bald Butte, which is the highest point before the prairies become the rocky mountains, and watch the stars. At some point in the night we'd always end up in our parents old station wagon, scanning the radio dial to listen for what we could hear amidst the crackle of AM static. The combination of that elevation and the right time of night meant that we were able to reach stations in cities we'd never been to. We'd keep a note book of the frequency and location of all the stations we heard and try to get as many and as far away as we could, like it was some sort of game. I remember hearing broadcasts of Colorado Rockies games from Denver and radio stations along the west coast like Seattle. That became the basis for the song Airwaves."
— Brady Frank
Expanding upon that theme, they chose to tie the EP together using elements of HAM radio and Morse Code transmissions throughout the recording. It builds upon a central theme of reaching out great distances when you feel lost or alone. And now that you've reached out to us, we're happy to say we're here.
